The sudden passing of Innocent Chukwuma is a tremendous loss for all of his many friends and for democracy in Nigeria and West Africa. As the founder and director of CLEEN, he worked effectively yet discreetly to promote police reform and public security in Nigeria. And more recently as the Director of the Ford Foundation’s office his influence extended to the entire region. He was a rare combination of a political idealist and visionary and an effective administrator and grant-maker. He contributed greatly to the defense of human rights, the rule of law, and clean government in Nigeria. Democrats throughout the world mourn his passing. He leaves an important legacy that will be long remembered.
